How Does a 0.15mm Ultra-Thin PCB Manufacturer Define the Manufacturing Boundary?

A 0.15mm ultra-thin PCB is sensitive to layer count, copper thickness, dielectric thickness, hole structure, trace geometry, and reflow. Asking each parameter separately can create an unmanufacturable combination. This article explains how to evaluate the six parameters together and define a production-ready design.

Each parameter may be possible alone but impossible in combination

A customer may request 0.15mm thickness, a specific copper thickness, a small hole, and fine traces. Each item can fall within equipment capability, yet the combination may leave insufficient room for dielectric, annular rings, and process tolerance. A 0.15mm ultra-thin PCB manufacturer must evaluate the complete stack-up rather than promise each limit separately.

Layers and copper thickness

Finished thickness includes copper, dielectric, surface finish, and tolerance. More layers reduce dielectric space; thicker copper changes lamination fill, etching, impedance, and stiffness. Allocation must balance current, signal integrity, mechanical behavior, and insulation.

Dielectric and material

Standard FR4 and high-Tg materials may have different resin flow, thermal expansion, and processing windows. The material must be evaluated for reflow, long-term environment, and lamination. Higher Tg alone does not remove the need for thin-board validation.

Trace width and spacing

Copper thickness, vacuum support, imaging registration, and etch compensation determine fine-line capability. LDI helps accuracy, but the production value should be based on target volume and yield rather than a laboratory limit. Copper balance also affects flatness.

Hole diameter and structure

Mechanical drilling requires support, annular-ring, and burr evaluation. Laser blind vias can support HDI, but dielectric thickness, landing, and plating reliability must be confirmed. At 0.15mm, hole structure must be designed together with layer count and routing.

SMT and assembly

Component layout, pad coplanarity, stencil, fixture, and reflow profile affect thin-board placement. If the board needs connectors, screws, or local stiffness, reinforcement and mechanical strength must be evaluated. Acceptance should include post-reflow warpage and function.

How to request an accurate quotation

Provide finished thickness, layers, copper, minimum trace, hole structure, component layout, reflow conditions, quantity, and reliability requirements together. Hongyi Precision can evaluate whether 0.15mm is appropriate or whether 0.2mm offers a better balance of space, performance, yield, and cost.
