Why Do FPC Customization Prices Vary So Widely? Identifying Material, Yield, and Delivery Risks Behind Low Quotes

8 min read

FPC price differences don’t always reflect supplier cost variations—they may stem from differing material grades, inspection scopes, yield assumptions, or delivery boundaries. This article deconstructs low-quote risks using real procurement scenarios to help customers identify truly executable FPC customization pricing.

When comparing FPC customization prices, buyers are often drawn immediately to a single low line item. Yet that low price may reflect different materials, narrower acceptance criteria, higher scrap assumptions, or omission of tooling, SMT, and reporting costs from the quote. A truly valuable comparison assesses whether each quote can be executed consistently over time—within identical quality and delivery boundaries.

Low Price Type 1: Misaligned Material Specifications

PI film, copper foil, coverlay, adhesive system, stiffener, and surface finish—brand and thickness all impact pricing. For dynamic flex, automotive high-temperature, or high-speed signal applications, substituting specified materials with standard-grade alternatives may reduce unit cost—but reliability risks and approval delays shift downstream.

Low Price Type 2: Omitted Inspection Items

Some quotes include AOI, electrical testing, critical dimension checks, and reliability reports; others cover only basic continuity testing. In automotive and robotics applications, removing essential inspections may delay defect detection until assembly or end-customer sites—making rework and screening costs far exceed upfront inspection expenses.

Low Price Type 3: Overly Optimistic Yield Assumptions

Material cost and labor hours are ultimately borne by good units. If a quote assumes peak trial-run yield—rather than stable production yield—scrap may rise during mass production due to lamination, etching, stiffener bonding, or outline defects. Buyers should request historical yield data across consecutive batches and common failure modes for comparable products.

Low Price Type 4: Incomplete Delivery Boundaries

Pricing differs significantly between bare FPC, FPCA with SMT, connector soldering, functional testing, packaging, labeling, and expedited delivery. If these items aren’t explicitly defined in the quote, subsequent change orders and delivery disputes become likely.

Compare on Total Cost—not First-Line Quote

  • One-time engineering, tooling, electrical test fixtures, and stencil costs;

  • Recurring costs for materials, panelization, processing, inspection, and packaging;

  • Rework, screening, failure analysis, and abnormal batch handling;

  • Potential losses from delivery delays, air freight surcharges, and production line stoppages;

  • Revalidation costs triggered by drawing, material, or process changes.

Buyers can request apples-to-apples quotes

Send identical drawings, material specs, quantities, inspection requirements, and delivery scope to all FPC suppliers—and require separate line items for non-recurring charges, per-unit production cost, yield assumptions, material inventory status, and quote validity period. Only then can price differences be attributed to genuine manufacturing capability—not inconsistent quoting scope.

Hongyi Precision recommends involving engineering and quality teams early in the quotation phase. A reasonable FPC customization price should transparently articulate material selection, process flow, inspection criteria, yield expectations, and delivery responsibilities—not simply present a lower first-line number.
