What Should an Automotive-Grade FPC Manufacturer Provide Beyond IATF 16949?

IATF 16949 is a foundation for automotive projects, but a certificate alone does not prove that every FPC is automotive-grade. Material approval, APQP thinking, change control, reliability validation, lot traceability, and corrective action must work as one closed loop. This article explains the capabilities customers should audit.

A certificate shows that a system exists; it does not prove every product is reliable

IATF 16949 demonstrates that an organization has an automotive quality-management framework. Whether a particular FPC is suitable for a vehicle still depends on how its design, materials, processes, and validation are controlled for the actual application. Supplier audits should therefore examine how the project is managed, not only the certificate expiry date.

APQP thinking should appear at project launch

From quotation onward, the supplier should identify special characteristics, failure consequences, critical dimensions, and validation needs. Drawing review, PFMEA, control plan, first article, and pilot data should correspond to one another. If a bend area is a critical characteristic, materials, routing, stiffener, inspection, and life testing need matching controls.

Material approval and substitution rules must be clear

Polyimide, copper foil, coverlay, adhesive, stiffeners, and surface finish affect temperature, flex life, and solder reliability. An automotive supplier should track supplier, grade, lot, and inspection results, and obtain approval before substituting a material. “Equivalent” cannot replace validation and customer approval.

Reliability testing must match the installation location

  • High-temperature static zones require thermal cycling, aging, layer-bond, and solder-joint evaluation.
  • Shifter and seat mechanisms require assembled-state flex, vibration, and connector-retention testing.
  • Door or humid areas require insulation, humidity, corrosion, and protection evaluation.
  • High-speed signal zones require impedance, return-path, and pre/post-test signal checks.

Change control and traceability are production baselines

Changes to equipment, materials, tooling, parameters, or production location can affect an automotive FPC. The supplier should define change classes, validation scope, customer notification, and old-material segregation. Each shipment lot should trace back to material, critical process, operator, and inspection records.

Three useful audit questions

  1. How was the most recent automotive issue contained, analyzed, and permanently corrected?
  2. How do critical characteristics on the drawing enter the control plan and shop-floor records?
  3. When a material or critical process changes, who approves it, what is validated, and when is the customer notified?

Hongyi Precision operates an IATF 16949-based quality system for automotive FPC programs and connects engineering review, material control, process data, and reliability validation from prototype through mass production.
